Bharat Bandh Today: Trade unions to go on Nationwide strike today

10 central trade unions are participating in the nationwide Bharat Bandh today. They are protesting the new labor and farm laws.

Protesting against the government’s new labor and farm laws, central trade unions have called for a nationwide Bharat Bandh today. Transport services have been partially hit in West Bengal and Kerala. Also, left-backed trade union members blocked railway tracks in some areas of Bengal. Further, Kerala experiencing a maximum halt in bus services, closing the market in many areas including Kochi. Odisha also saw some rallies by trade union members. There are no reports of banking services being affected. Protesting trade union members have started gathering at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. According to trade union leaders, 25 crores of workers in the country are part of the Bharat Bandh Today.

10 central unions including the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), All India United Trade Union Centre (AIUTUC), Trade Union Co-ordination Centre (TUCC), Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU) and others are participating in the Bharat Bandh Today. While the RSS-affiliated Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) denied their participation in the strike.

According to the Central trade union leaders, this Bharat Bandh will be a huge success in West Bengal. According to a report in PTI (Press Trust of India), this strike will be successful in key sectors such as jute, port, tea, coal, and banking.

Further, the trade union wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress did not even oppose the Bharat Bandh Today. However, in a note, the Bengal government however said it is against bandhs and all its offices will remain open today.
