Indian-origin Dr. Gaurav Sharma, elected as a member of the parliament in New Zealand took an oath in Sanskrit on November 25. He is “only the second person ever” to do it. Netizens have started celebrating for “making history” and crediting Sharma for making them “feel proud of being Indian”. It all started when Dr. Gaurav Sharma shared a video on his social media handle taking affirmation in the 3,500-year-old ancient language of Sanskrit. Soon after the video was uploaded it went viral. Dr. Gaurav Sharma comes from Himachal Pradesh and won the election in the Kiwi nation as the candidate for Labour Party from hamilton West.
Dr. Gaurav Sharma first took the affirmation in the Maori language and then in Sanskrit. The video was also shared by India’s High Commission to New Zealand Muktesh Pardeshi appreciating the New Zealand MP for showing “respect” to the cultural traditions of both nations.
Sharma wrote in the caption, “Today I took my Affirmation of Allegiance to the Crown in Te Reo Māori, to acknowledge Tangata Whenua, and in Sanskrit, to acknowledge my Indian heritage. I have tried to learn Te Reo in the past through Unitec and learned Sanskrit when I was in primary and middle school in India.”
“I am deeply honored to be part of the 53rd New Zealand Parliament and look forward to serving fellow Hamiltonians as well as New Zealand over the next three years,” he added.

Sanskrit is a 3500 year old language from which many of the current Indian languages have originated. I have been told today that I am only the second person ever to take Oath/Affirmation in Sanskrit outside of India.
