Mumbai Police arrested Suresh Raina, singer Guru Randhawa and interior designer Sussanne Khan, among 34 individuals for flouting COVID-19 curfew norms.

At around 2:50 AM last night, Mumbai Police arrested Suresh Raina, singer Guru Randhawa and interior designer Sussanne Khan, among 34 individuals for flouting COVID-19 curfew norms. They were arrested from Dragon Fly Club in Andheri’s JW Marriott Hotel where they were partying last night.

Why is Mumbai under a night curfew?

From Monday onwards, the Maharashtra government has imposed night curfew in Mumbai and other cities and municipal corporation areas in the state. The action was taken promptly after UK declared the emergence of a new strain of Coronavirus spreading across Europe. The night curfew is to be strictly followed from December 22 to January 5. It was issued keeping in mind the possible risk from upcoming Christmas and New Year revelry.

Late on Monday night, Mumbai Police raided the Dragon Fly Club after reports of gross violation of COVID-19 rules and social distancing protocols. Incidentally, several night clubs across Mumbai are under the police radar for violation of COVID-19 restrictions.

Several celebrities were partying at the Dragon Fly Club when the raid happened. Police lodged FIRs against 34 people present at the scene, including seven members of the hotel staff. Under Section 188 of IPC, Bombay Police Act and Epidemic Disease Act, celebrities like Raina, Randhawa and Khan were booked by the police. Reportedly, rapper Badshah was spotted fleeing the scene from the back gate during the raid.

Why did Mumbai Police arrest Suresh Raina?

An official statement released by Mumbai Police says –

“An offence has been registered u/s 188, 269, 34 IPC and u/s 51 NDMA against 34 persons at Sahar police station after the raid was conducted at 2.50 AM at Dragonfly pub, for keeping establishment open beyond the permissible time limit, not following Covid norms such as social distancing, not wearing a face mask.”

Suresh Raina was later granted bail. The cricketer, who had recently retired from international cricket in August 2020, was in Mumbai for a shoot. A statement issued by his management team says that the shoot apparently continued till late hours. Afterwards, a friend invited him for dinner at the hotel before heading back to Delhi via an early flight.

The statement further added that Raina was unaware of the local timings and new protocols, and he had complied with the authorities once intimated about the same. “He always holds rules and laws laid down by governing bodies with the highest regard and will continue to do so in the future as well” – read the release.
