The announcement was made through a video conference by PM Modi addressing the farmers after a massive protest by farmers in India.

The protest was to oppose the three farm laws that were issued by the Modi government. But, the government mentioned that the laws were to help the farmers.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also participated in the video conference where he spoke to selective farmers.

“No corporate can snatch away any farmer’s land as long as Narendra Modi is Prime Minister,” Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar spoke about the farm laws stating that farmers will learn about the new three farm laws and asked to move forward.

Three Farm Laws

PM Modi grants Rs18000 crores to the farmers after a massive protest against the recent farm laws.

  • The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act
  • The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act
  • The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act.

The farm law was initially declared in June. The three Ordinances was conducted before the approval by Parliament.

The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce Act

This law lets farmers sell their crop productions without involving the Agriculture Produce Market Committees (APMCs).

The traders with the licence can buy the produced crops from the farmers without any middle-men at the agreed cost.

The law has no mandi tax forced by the state governments.

Farmers Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act

This law allows the farmers in the country to contract their farming and market their crops and production freely.

The Essential Commodities Act

This law gives away free things like food grains, pulses, edible oils and onion for the trade only in crises.

The government mentioned that the three laws are to provide new opportunities for the farmers which will benefit them to earn more on their production.

Then Why Protest?

The MSP assurance has emerged as the main sticking point in the farmers’ protest.

There is an apprehension among the farmers that allowing outside-APMC trade of farm produces would lead to lesser buying by the government agencies in the approved mandis.

The MSP system will become pointless, as they fear not having a guaranteed income from their production.

Minister’s Talks

Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, “Through his address, PM Modi has cleared that government is ready for talks with those who have any questions regarding the three new farm laws. I hope, now protesting farmers will speak to the govt.”

Sitharaman further said, “I want to ask Rahul Gandhi that were these pro-farmers policies not mentioned in the 2019 election manifesto of Congress? They are protesting just because those reforms are being implemented by PM Modi, and not them.”
