Can homoeopathy cure Covid-19? Know the debate around it

The pandemic is raging across India. With almost 2.5 lakh cases so far, the country’s battle against the virus is far from end. We have flattened our GDP in order to curb the disease’s spread. Amid all these, homoeopathy shows a ray of hope. Can homoeopathy really cure Covid-19?

As researchers across the globe are racing to get a vaccine to beat the virus, a parallel search is on to find a rescue in alternative medicines. Among these, homoeopathy shows promise, the Centre claims.

Homoeopathy cure to fight Covid-19?

The Centre’s Ayush ministry in its latest guidelines has recommended all states to start using Arsenic Album 30. As per the ministry, the drug boosts immunity and prevents virus attack. States like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka are using the drug for high-risk cases. In Bhopal doctors have even claimed that they successfully treated mild Covid-19 cases with this drug.

What is Arsenic Album 30?

Many of you must have heard about the drug already. It is one of those medicines that our grandpas or grandmas used to treat us with when we had a sore throat or a running nose. They always had a homoeopathy remedy for all our illnesses.

For those who don’t know, Arsenic Album 30 is a drug which is made by heating arsenic with distilled water. A small bottle of the drug is available at Rs 30 at homoeopathy medicine stores.

According to experts, Arsenic Album 30 takes care of cold and cough, diarrhoea, restlessness, chest pain, anxiety among other such illness. As homoeopathy medicines are free of side-effects, people with any medical background can have them without a worry.

Since the drug is known to have effective results for flu-like symptoms and respiratory infections, homoeopathy practitioners are rooting for the medicine.

How much is India using the drug?

From March 25, people are flocking to homoeopathy medicine stores to buy Arsenic Album, even at triple its original price. Along with the Ayush ministry, the Scientific Advisory Board of the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy also suggested the drug’s use to prevent Covid-19.

Kerala, apparently India’s best-performing state against Covid-19, has distributed the medicine to around 45 lakh people already to “boost immunity”.

If you want to know more about the drug and homoeopathy cure to Covid-19, you can check out the discussions put up by the American Institute of Homoeopathy on their website.

What’s the debate all about?

There is NO foolproof scientific evidence that homoeopathy has the best defense against the coronavirus. Researches are still finding how the drug works, how far it cures a patient and other such factors. Also, every human being may not react the same way to the medicine.

So does that mean no positive outcome? Well, there’s no reason to be fully dejected about homoeopathy’s prospect to beat the virus to some extent, if not entirely. If you can at least boost your immunity with Arsenic Album, then why not? It doesn’t do any harm. But again, there’s no scientific evidence yet that can prove Arsenic Album 30 can prevent Covid-19.

What do big institutions say?

Neither the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) nor the World Health Organization have any guidelines on using Arsenic Album as a Covid-19 treatment. Well, we have nothing to say against the ICMR guidelines, but that of WHO? There’s enough room for doubt over the WHO’s way of handling the Covid-19 crisis. Be it shielding China for “suppressing information” on the virus’s nature and spread and use of Hydroxychloroquine among other issues, they kept switching their stand every now and then under various circumstances.

We believe if homoeopathy worked for you before and you have faith in the practice, then no harm trying it in this scenario too. The outcome could be a subjective experience but still it’s better if you get rid of simple flu-like symptoms. Even if you feel it didn’t work for you, it won’t cause any harm to you either.

Because we have so many people around us who sneeze or cough twice a day and lose their sleep, panicking whether they have coronavirus! Take a chill pill guys!
