Poornima Seetharaman; The first Indian woman game designer to be in ‘Women in Games Hall of Fames’

Poornima Seetharaman is among the first and few game designers in India who got globally acclaimed in the Games Hall of Fame for her work.

Poornima Seetharaman, a Bangalore based game designer was enlisted in the ‘Women Games Hall of Fames’ by being the first Indian woman as a game designer.

Game designing is one of the most emerging professions, which is why a lot of aspiring game designers can be seen now. Poornima Seetharaman is the first Indian woman game designer to enter the global platform.

Poornima Seetharaman: Journey As A Game Designer

It started with her arranging and designing games, Age of Empires for her college friends. In 2006, Poornima Seetharaman started her career as a game designer.

She said, “When I was just 16, with the influence of my friends I started playing games like Age of Empires II and Warcraft III. That is when my interest in gaming began.”

I created campaigns for the games during my college days and, it was just for fun. But it took me a while to realise that these campaigns were of game design,” she said Poornima Seetharaman.

Her friends would give her feedbacks on the campaigns. Soon after her college, one of her friends being impressed with her AoE campaigns, recommended a game designing job in a Korean game studio. Her first work involved using Dungeons & Dragon’s manuals.

Seetharaman’s journey to Games Hall of Fame

Poornima Seetharaman has worked with the world’s best-known gaming franchise that is from FarmVille to Bio-shock. She has also been a part of many leadership groups who have helped to expand the video game industry in the nation.

The Games Hall of Fame opened its barrier globally for the first time. Poornima had never given her name to any of these nominations before. But, this time she gathered her courage and gave her name.

The Global jury selected her name among 61 entries. When her name got enlisted in the Women in Games Hall of Fame, after the past winning big names such as Rhianna Pratchett (Heavenly Sword, Tomb Raider), Shioban Reddy (Little Big Planet), and Debbie Bestwick (Worms series).

“I am striving to build a platform that spreads awareness among women about game development.”

Poornima Seetharaman being an inspiration is trying to develop the gaming industry in India as a serious profession and create awareness about women in gaming development.
