Remembering Sandeep Unnikrishnan on his 44th Birthday

The famous Taj was subjected to attack the fateful night of 26 November 2009. Haryana had just heard about the death of ATS Chief Hemant Karkare. Major Unnikrishnan, who then was at the NSG hub of Mansar.

Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s 44th Birthday; the hero who died rescuing 14 hostages during 26/11 Mumbai attack.

Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan was born on 15 March 1977. Today we celebrate is 44th birthday of the hero who rescued over 14 hostages during the Mumbai attack.

Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s 44th Birthday

He served as an officer in the Indian Army as Special Action Group of the National Security Guards.

Since his childhood Sandeep had a simple crew cut and he showed interest in joining the Indian army.

He was born in Kozhikode, Kerala and moved to Banglore. He was a part of the Kargil War in 1999.

He was the only son of retired ISRO officer K. Unnikrishnan and Dhanalakshmi Unnikrishnan. 

Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s Service 

After his graduation at National Defence Academy (NDA), he joined the Bihar Regiment’s 7th Battalion (Infantry) in 1999.

Then, the National Service Guard choose him. Unnikrishnan topped the most challenging course in the army’ Ghatak’ and earned “instructor grading” and commendation.

Significant Unnikrishnan had also been an instructor in NSG, and he had topped the Ghatak course. He volunteered for the Operation Black Tornado (Mumbai Operation) when the NSG men assembled informally at the NSG centre.

The hero of the 26/11 Mumbai attack 

The hostages were evacuated after a day’s operation. On 27 November Major Unnikrishnan decided to go up the wing of the Taj, to save an employee who is locked in the data centre office.

Major Unnikrishnan and his NSG commando fellow Sunil Yadav had barely arrived at the first floor, where the gunmen shot them. 

Yadav’s commando took seven bullets at the shot and injured him badly, but not fatally. Major Unnikrishnan battled during the evacuation of Yadav.

The Ashok Chakra was honoured to Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan in 2009. Dhanalakshmi who is the mother of Sandeep received the highest honour, Sandeep’s Ashok Chakra.
