Tamil Nadu barber creates mini library inside salon, gives discount to those who read the books

A barber from Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi has garnered praise after converting a portion of his salon into a library.

The barber, Pon Mariappan, offers a discount of up to Rs 30 to any customer who, while waiting for his turn, reads at least ten pages of a book from his library and writes about it.

“I have studied up to class 8th. I could not further my studies beyond that due to family circumstances. When I see educated people, I feel something amiss in me. So, I thought why not establish a library, which would benefit many people, this became an inspiration for me,” Pon said while talking to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Mann Ki Baat in October.

When Pon opened his salon in the year 2014, he noticed how customers got engrossed watching the television in his salon, while waiting for their turn. They would also be occupied with their mobile phones.

Pon then decided to replace the TV with books. His mini library now has a collection of over 900 books in both Tamil and English.

Pon has been appreciated by PM Modi as well as Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi, who has contributed 50 books to his library.
