A Mumbai auto driver whose heartwarming story had gone viral some days ago has received ₹ 24 lakh in donations through a crowdfunding initiative. Desraj is an auto rickshaw driver from Mumbai who sold his house to fund his granddaughter’s education. His story was widely circulated after ‘Humans of Bombay’ shared it on social media.

Desraj revealed that after both his sons died, the responsibility of his family fell on his shoulders.

“It was the responsibility of my daughters-in-law and their four children that kept me going,” Desraj revealed.

Desraj knew he could not afford to fund his granddaughter’s education after she said that she wanted  to travel to Delhi for a B.Ed course. He then sold his house to fund her education.

“I had to fulfill her dreams… at any cost. So, I sold our house and paid her fee,” he said.

Desraj’s act of kindness touched thousands of hearts, and netizens widely shared it on social media. Congress’s Archana Dalmia also posted his story on Twitter, appealing to Mumbai residents to help the auto driver. Milind Deora retweeted the post.

A Facebook user named Gunjan Ratti started a fundraiser for Desraj, and it exceeded its goal of ₹ 20 lakh.
