[Watch] Prof Sarah Gilbert, the woman behind UK’s AstraZeneca vaccine gets a standing ovation at Wimbledon Centre Court

Dame Sarah Gilbert was left in tears after the crowd rose to lengthy applause at the Wimbledon Centre Court.

On Monday, Dame Sarah Gilbert, who co-designed the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, was given a standing ovation by the crowd on Wimbledon’s Centre Court. All the medical staff and other frontline heroes were also invited to sit in the Royal Box on the first day of this year’s Wimbledon.

Wimbledon was canceled last year due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus. It was for the first time since World War II that Wimbledon was canceled. Just before Novak Djokovic, the defending champion, and Jack Draper, a 19-year-old Brit, took the court for the tournament’s first match in 715 days, the public-address announcer informed the crowd that NHS workers and scientists, including Dame Sarah Gilbert, an Oxford professor who worked on the AstraZeneca vaccine, were seated courtside.

Commentator Andrew Cotter said,

“an emotional day for lots of people involved, and for everyone in the crowd to be here. It means a great deal to a great number of people.”

Soon after the crowd rose to lengthy applause, Dame Sarah Gilbert’s eyes were filled with tears. Apart from being a Professor of Vaccinology at Oxford University, Gilbert is also a mother of triplets. She is hailed as a hero in the UK for her contribution to developing the vaccine.

Dame Sarah Gilbert designed the vaccine with Sir Andrew Pollard, and Clinical Biomanufacturing Facility Professor Cath Green. The trio is hugely appreciated for their quick efficiency, obtaining the tiniest sample of the Virus in late January itself and wasting no time commencing the clinical trials two months after that.
