Social distancing goes for a toss at Kumbh Mela, Internet recalls the Tablighi Jamaat incident and asks why is everyone silent now?

Netizens started trending Tablighi Jamaat and started questioning why is Kumbh Mela not responsible for violating the COVID-19 now?

India is currently under the second wave of the COVID-19 virus with around 1,34,00,000 total cases. The staggering numbers have pushed India on the second spot worldwide in terms of the highest COVID-19 infections. It’s been more than a week that the highest single-day spikes are growing each day. However, the state government is yet to make any decisions regarding lockdown. Many states have already imposed night curfew. What makes it worse is that the government has also stopped vaccination in many cities or regions due to the lack of availability. This halt has given rise to worsen the situation in the country following 170,209 total deaths till now.

Having said that, people are yet to understand the seriousness of the virus. Social distancing and avoiding crowd gathering is something that is extremely important to attend to the fall of this deadly virus. But what we have witnessed today in Uttarakhand’s Haridwar is baffling and horrendous at the same time. On Monday, people gathered in large numbers for the second royal bath of the Kumbh. This occasion is worldwide popular and devotees are profoundly committed to never miss the holy dip in the river banks and pray for their wellness. As the social distancing norms were hugely violated by the devotees, the police also mentioned that it is very difficult for them to ensure social distancing or issue challans.

“We are continuously appealing to people to follow Covid appropriate behavior. But due to the huge crowd, it is practically not possible to issue challans today. It is very difficult to ensure social distancing at ghats,” said Inspector-general of Police, Haridwar Kumbh Mela, Sanjay Gunjyal, according to news agency ANI.

Looking at the stats of Uttrakhand, the state has a total of 107K cases following 1,752 deaths. The active cases have crossed the 6,000 mark. So after the Kumbh Mela incident came to light, the Internet was not only shocked but also questioned the hypocrisy of the authorities and state government. Netizens also started trending Tablighi Jamaat and started questioning why is Kumbh Mela not responsible for violating the COVID-19 now? Why was Tablighi Jamaat only accused of holding religious gatherings and spreading the virus?
